Ujima: A Road to Excellence Scholarship 2017 - Tuesday, October 31, 2017

Purpose:  The premise of this scholarship is Ujima: Collective Work & Responsibility. As a principle, Ujima means that we accept the fact that we are collectively responsible for our failures as well as our victories and achievements. This scholarship’s goal is to remove barriers for obtaining higher education, for all students. This scholarship is designed to assist and support high school seniors in furthering their education. This scholarship is an application fee waiver for the HBCU Common application.  


1.DEADLINE for scholarship applications is Tuesday, October 31, 2017.  (no exceptions).

2.Refer to criteria below for eligibility requirements.

3.Refer to application process below for a list of the supporting documents needed (i.e., reference forms, evidence of GPA, etc.)  Incomplete applications will not be considered.

4.If any question does not apply to you in this application please put N/A in the space.

5.Type or print legibly.  Illegible applications will not be considered.

6.You will be notified December 19, 2017 if you are the recipient of the scholarship.

7.Scholarship (fee waiver) will be mailed directly to the Get Educated-HBCU Common Application by December 31, 2017.



1.Applicant must be a graduating high school senior

2.Applicant must demonstrate positive-impact involvement – in the complete sense – consistent with capacity and circumstances and/or significant improvement/success in scholarship and community involvement, determined through letters of recommendation.


Application Process:  

             Applicant must submit the following items:

1.Completed application form (if handwritten, please print legibly)

2.Two (2) letters of recommendations from choice of high school teachers, administrators, counselors, employers, or individual with significant knowledge of applicant’s experience and involvement.

3.An official and recent high school transcript with current GPA and ACT/SAT score if applicable

4.Personal Essay.  In your essay, please answer the questions of what have you have done to earn this award and what the effect this award will have on your future.  



 Deadline for the application is Tuesday, October 31, 2017.  Applications turned in after this date will not be considered.
